Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious condition that affects breathing during sleep, leading to frequent interruptions and poor rest quality. It can cause fatigue, headaches, and long-term health issues if left untreated. Identifying the causes of obstructive sleep apnea in adults helps in managing and preventing the disorder effectively. The main cause is the relaxation of throat muscles that block airflow during sleep. Excess body weight, especially around the neck, increases this risk significantly. Structural issues like a deviated septum or enlarged tonsils can also restrict breathing. Smoking and alcohol use further relax airway muscles, worsening symptoms. Genetics and aging may also play a role in muscle weakness and airway narrowing. Men are more likely to develop this condition, though it affects women too. Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and sleeping on one’s side can reduce episodes. Proper diagnosis and treatment improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
